Tourists Welcome or How the Myth Loses its Grounds
ABSTRACT:
One of the major contemporary conditions in art encompasses an emphasis on geo-political exoticisms and artworks that emerge from such.
These artworks function similar to a souvenir or a tourist attraction and as such are in danger of being drained of their primary
conceptual/inner contextual value. At the time of re-emergence of local specificities it seems valid to address the current artistic
production from the East of Europe and its political and aesthetical implications. This is an inquest into the current state of affairs
and the artistic practices which critically deal with the notions of Other space, a strategically constructed set of rules which
presents a possible alternative against the incomprehensive and illegible Otherness, and as such is a result of strategic behavior
inside the symbolic field of artistic operation.
BIOGRAPHY:
Jasmina Cibic (Ljubljana, 1979) graduated at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, Italy in 2003. She exhibited installation and video
work in exhibitions including: »Percorsi d`Arte«, Modern Gallery, Bologna, »Forme Umane«, Bevilaqua La Masa, Venice and worked as a
visual arts tutor at the Venice Fine Art Academy. In 2001 she co-founded the artist group Passaporta (Mara Ambrozic, Jasmina Cibic,
Meta Grgurevic and Mery Favaretto), which performed and showed at exhibitions and festivals including: »11. Biennial of Young Artists
COSMOS, Athens«, »Nacionalna Galerija« Sarajevo and was nominated by Cesare Pietroiusti for “Premio Furla” award in 2004. She graduated
from the MA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College in 2006. Recent exhibitions include: “Tourists Welcome”, Joze Pucnik Airport Slovenia,
“Landescape”, Kunstlerhaus Graz, “Natural Relations”, SKUC Gallery, Ljubljana, “Museum on the Street”, Museum of Modern Art Ljubljana.
Her work has been published in Portfolio Magazine, Falter Magazine and was featured in Pilot III. Her upcoming solo exhibitions this
year include: “Ideologies of Display”, Galerija Ganes Pratt, Ljubljana and “Other Mythologies” at Maribor Art Gallery. The focus of
Jasmina Cibic’s artistic practice is not the establishment of packaged exotics based on the geopolitical realities of a territory, but
rather another kind, which remains undefined in relation to its spatial and temporal parameters. Accordingly, the medium of execution
is adapted to the context of architectural form and serves to create a situation in which a work of art presents the act of imposing an
experience on the viewer or else is merely a memento of its own expropriated experience (and well aware of that, too).
